"No story lives on unless someone wants to listen. The stories we love best do live in us forever. So whether you come back by page or by the big screen. Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home." -- J.K. Rowling

except through the couples she is led to save.
Two thousand years is an
awfully long time to live alone. And the business of love saving isn’t what it

instantly. He may dress differently and have gained a few new scars, but she

Ghosts and misfits, a stone and crystals, a mysterious book, an ancient prophecy—all these reveal the truth about Jemma's past and a destiny far greater and more dangerous than she could have imagined in her wildest fantasies. With her telepathic golden rats, Noodle and Pie, and her trusted friend, Digby, Jemma navigates increasingly dark forces, as helpers both seen and unseen, gather. But in the end, it is her own powers that she must bring to light, for only she has the key to defeating the evil ones and fulfilling the prophecy that will bring back the sun and restore peace in Anglavia."
The Flame in the Mist by Kit Grindstaff was a wonderful and very intelligent Middle Grade novel in the lieu of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter! I loved it!
The story takes places in a world called Anglavia, a land that is dominated by an evil family who control the mist that covers the entire land and chokes the people, keeping them under their control. It is in this dark family that the story's MC comes from, a young girl named Jemma who comes to understand that she does not belong with her family - she is not evil.. and thus the adventure starts!
The novel was fast-paced and exciting, and when things did slow down for characters and the world to be better developed for the reader, I was not bored at all. Grindstaff has created a rich and complex, yet realistic world that entertains and adds something new and fun to the fantasy genre. Jemma is accompanied by her two telepathic rats Noodle and Pie, who have the most awesome names!
Grindstaff's writing is crisp and neat and pulls you in to the pages so that you can imagine everything completely - you will not want to put the book done. It seriously has that vibe..I cannot completely explain it, but I loved this book and cannot wait for the sequel.
The story builds suspense and is funny and sweet and at times, dark, but just the right amount as to not scare people away, but to keep them hooked!
Kit Grindstaff was born near London, and grew up in the rolling countryside of England. After a brush with pop stardom (under her maiden name, Hain), she moved to New York and embarked on her successful career as a pop song writer. Kit now lives with her husband in the rolling countryside of Pennsylvania, where she still writes songs as well as children's books. The Flame In The Mist is her first novel.
"Set in an imagined past, this dark fantasy-adventure is for fans of Philip
Pullman's The Golden Compass. Features Jemma, a fiery-headed heroine
